Data backup: the BeBackup innovation

EDII has published BeBackup since 2012. An independent French company, wholly owned by its founder and never sold on: the software, the servers and the technical support have been in the same hands since day one.

  • 14 years of independence: never sold on, same founder since 2012
  • 5,0/5 out of 28 Google reviews left by IT service providers
  • 100% French: development, hosting and technical support
  • Direct with the team that writes the software, no scripted support

There was no backup solution that was both economical and within reach for small and medium businesses. The only ones available were very expensive and invariably included the hosting. So I invented BeBackup. Even today, our offering is unique on the business backup market.

How BeBackup came about

David Dantoni learned to program at around ten years old and never changed course. A master's degree in computing, then ten years developing Sesam-Vitale approved medical software for a nuclear medicine practice: enough to gauge what is expected of a tool somebody else's work depends on.

He then moved into business: a year in Ireland, then back to France, where he set up as an IT service provider. He kept meeting the same problem at his clients' — backups on tape or on hard drives, which somebody has to remember to swap, to take away, to check. He looked for an automated, off-site service with block-level delta, encryption and versioning, at a price the end client could bear and the provider could make a margin on. He did not find one.

The architecture of the core took shape over running sessions in the parks of Montpellier, and the first lines of code were written. Two years of work later, EDII was founded and the first version went on sale. The year was 2012.

Fourteen years on, the product is in its seventh major version. The team has grown, the Montpellier head office has been joined by offices in Nîmes, and the solution is deployed with a network of partner IT providers who install and run it for their own clients.

BeBackup breaks the mould

In 2012, the backup services on the market did not meet the needs of medium, small and very small businesses. How do you solve that? You change the offering. You follow strong values that put people back at the centre of a field that has nonetheless gone virtual. You put forward an innovative solution that cuts costs and gives service providers and IT departments more autonomy.

How? By imagining:

  • A backup system with no imposed hosting.
  • A system ideal for keeping a hand on where data is stored, while guaranteeing its security and its integrity.
  • A system intuitive, flexible and reliable enough for simple, quick management and monitoring.
  • A system that champions French expertise.

Buying local also means choosing a backup solution like BeBackup. Are we not living through an awakening to the dangers of offshoring and of foreign super-powers holding sway? Our solution is developed and maintained in France. It is meant to play its part in spreading wealth around.

The four Toltec agreements, BeBackup style

  • Let your word be your bond

BeBackup is more than backup software: it is a committed solution. Committed to its clients, to innovation, and to respecting the budget constraints of small and medium organisations.

  • Whatever happens, stay loyal

What if we started from the idea that listening, keeping your word and a strong sense of responsibility are enough to satisfy your clients? By supporting you and taking you seriously in solving your problems, we lay the groundwork for a long collaboration.

  • Do nothing without passion

A taste for computing is not something you can fake. At BeBackup, development, administration and support are in the hands of people who enjoy this work and have been doing it a long time — a little geeky, but very approachable.

  • Let our service be impeccable

We are here to serve the well-being of your company, and of your nerves — so sensitive to computer trouble. Because nothing replaces people, nor the direct support of professionals, we guarantee quality work, close at hand.

A word from the founder

A developer and IT service provider by trade, I was looking for a backup solution that would let me host my clients' backups cheaply. With the arrival of ADSL, I saw an opportunity to offer my clients an off-site backup service using block-level delta with versioning. Since no solution at the time let me do that, the idea of creating BeBackup was born.

Continuity, by design

Choosing a backup solution means committing for years: the question of how long the vendor will last is a fair one, and it comes up before signing.

BeBackup has been in production since 2012 and is now in its seventh major version. The registered office is in Montpellier, the offices in Nîmes. Development, administration and support are distinct roles, and the solution is deployed through a network of partner providers: for the client company, the first point of contact is its own IT service provider, the one who already knows its estate.

Above all, your continuity does not rest on ours. The encryption key is generated on your machines and never leaves them: whether the backup server is hosted by us — the most common case, most of our partners entrust it to us —, at your premises or at your client's, we have no access whatsoever to the content of your backups. This is not only a property of the software: the contract states it, the data encryption key is under no circumstances held by the vendor.

And the hosting remains a reversible choice, contractually. The contract can be terminated at any time with one month's notice. At its end, we undertake to return the data to you — or to hand it to the provider you designate —, then to destroy our copies and give you written confirmation. Technically, taking it back changes nothing about your tooling: same software, same console, and stores replicate from one BeBackup server to another.

That is the whole difference between hosting you choose and hosting that is imposed on you — chosen, it can be entrusted and then taken back; imposed, the question “what if the vendor stops?” stays unanswered. The contract can be downloaded from the software interface: these undertakings can be checked before signing, not after.
