Version 7

BeBackup 7 extends the scope

Microsoft 365, a versioned shared folder, five more platforms, a rethought system backup, cross-client deduplication and security brought up to the level expected today.

Version 7 is not just a list of extra options. It moves the boundary of what a service provider can protect with one solution, one console and one contract.

In practice: your clients' Microsoft 365 tenants, their designers' Macs, the Linux servers, the Synology NAS devices, their sales team's phones — all of it comes into the same scope as the Windows workstations and servers you already back up. With the same engine, the same encryption, the same retention and the same dashboard.

The protected scope widens

Two whole areas join the solution.

New in v7

Microsoft 365

Mailboxes, contacts, calendars, tasks, OneDrive, SharePoint sites, libraries and lists, backed up by the server through the Microsoft Graph API — with nothing installed on the workstations. Subsequent backups are incremental using delta tokens, and restoring is done item by item from the browser: search for a message, preview it, put it back in its original mailbox or in another.

BeBackup Drive

A folder shared and synchronised across several workstations and several users, built on a BeBackup backup medium rather than on a format of its own. It is therefore versioned, deduplicated and end-to-end encrypted like a backup: a file overwritten — by mistake or by ransomware — is recovered from its history. Files on demand keep the local disk free.

Every machine in the estate, not only Windows

The same backup engine, on five more platforms.

New in v7

macOS and Linux

A signed and notarised package for macOS, with APFS snapshots for consistency; a Debian and Ubuntu package with a systemd service and LVM and btrfs snapshots. Both are driven from the server's web interface and have a complete command line.

New in v7

Synology DSM 7

An x86_64 and ARM package, with a page built into the DSM desktop to create the profile and test the connection. The data is kept across package updates.

New in v7

Android and iPhone

A mobile app that backs up the device's photos, videos and files to your own server: backup in the background, start at boot, remote control from the web interface. Phones stop being a blind spot in the estate.

System backup rethought

One backup for the whole system and for any individual file.

New in v7

BeBackup SmartImage®

NTFS partitions are read file by file by BeBackup's own NTFS engine, the rest of the disk as an image. The result: a system backup restorable to bare metal from which a single file can also be extracted, and which carries only the changed files instead of whole disk blocks. A partition with no drive letter is supported.

New in v7

P2V and V2V restore

A physical or virtual machine is restored onto the disks of a VMware ESXi VM, with disk-by-disk mapping, the VM stopped and started automatically, and an empty VM created from the interface. When the replacement hardware is three days away, trading resumes without waiting for it.

Storage, reworked from the ground up

Two mechanisms that change the economics of an estate.

New in v7

Cross-client deduplication accelerator

The blocks that recur from one client to the next — operating systems, office suites, the same line-of-business software — are promoted into a shared store on SSD. Confidentiality is addressed head-on: the store is organised into sets, each carrying its own encryption key, its threshold and its minimum size. Nothing is in the clear on the SSD, and a set can be exported and replicated to other servers, key included.

Tiered retention, and its simulation

Beyond the rolling history, tiered retention: minimum number of versions, last backup of the day, the week, the month, the year. And above all a simulation that shows, before the rule is applied, what would be kept and what would be deleted — backup by backup, with the reason.

Security at the level expected today

Transport, access to the console, and certificates.

New in v7

TLS 1.3 and OpenSSL 3.5

Transport between agents and server moves to TLS 1.3, on a signed OpenSSL 3.5, with a TLS 1.2 floor for browsers. Neither the TLS nor the packet encryption can be disabled by configuration.

New in v7

Two-factor authentication and device enrolment

TOTP compatible with Google Authenticator, with a QR code generated by the server. A connection from an unknown device triggers a validation code and an email giving the IP address and the browser; each user then manages their devices.

Automatic Let's Encrypt certificates

Issued from the interface through ACME v2, then renewed automatically thirty days before expiry. Let's Encrypt, Buypass and ZeroSSL are offered, or a custom authority by URL. No more certificate expiring on a Sunday morning.

What does not change

The principles that have shaped BeBackup since 2012 are untouched, and the new features fit within them rather than getting round them.

  • AES-256 encryption happens on the workstation, the key never travels
  • You choose where the server is hosted: with you, with the client, or dedicated
  • Microsoft 365 backups land in an ordinary BeBackup medium
  • The BeBackup Drive folder is a backup medium, not a format of its own
  • A single console for all your clients, in white label
  • Development, hosting and support in France

This is the point that matters to an operator: the new areas automatically inherit versions, deduplication, integrity checking by hashes, retention and off-site replication. There is no second product to administer.
